Commences with the power
I’ve lied about god all my life
—Peter Meinke
But who hasn’t? To make
even the simplest statement
risks becoming a fake,
a know-it-all who can’t know
basic facts, like God’s
eye color, nor show
definitively what infinitude has said
off book. What happens
when God is dead
disintegrates to skit and scat,
guesswork we nonetheless work
at. And after that—
well, you know the rest,
and though we myth-minders
have found it best
to focus on the resurrection,
the part where God
draws into his perfection
an imperfect people who grow
from glory into glory,
we also know this
story we so happily applaud
commences with the power
to kill a god.
