Revealing the character and purpose of God
God’s character is for the three Trinitarian persons to be utterly with one another; God’s purpose is for us likewise to be with the Trinity, one another and the creation. In the exile, Israel realizes that God’s true purpose is with (solidarity) rather than for (granting immediate blessing). The early church witnessed this same transition: the incarnate, crucified Jesus definitively reveals the God whose character and purpose are to be with us always, whatever happens.
