John Stauffer is chair of history and literature and professor of English and American Studies at Harvard. He writes and lectures on the Civil War era, antislavery, and photography and is the prize-winning author of several books, including The Black Hearts of Men, Giants: The Parallel lives of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln and most recently The Battle Hymn of the Republic: A Biography of the Song That Marches On, coauthored with Benjamin Soskis.
